On July 1, 2024, three new criminal laws will come into effect in India, replacing the British-era Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and Indian Evidence Act. These new laws are:
- The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which replaces
the IPC
- The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS),
which replaces the CrPC
- The Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), which
replaces the Indian Evidence Act
The legal community has expressed
apprehension about the transition, with judges undergoing extensive training to
adapt to the changes. While the government has stated that the new laws
will de-colonize and modernize the legal system, critics argue that most of the
provisions are similar to the old laws with different numberings and labellings.
