Cyberpunk 2077: The Chrome Stallion Rides Off Into the Sunset - Developers Set Sights on New Horizons

Highlights: CD Projekt Red has officially concluded its work on Cyberpunk 2077, three and a half years after its troubled launch in December 2020. As of April 30, 2023, the team responsible for the game has been reduced to zero, marking a significant milestone as the studio moves on to focus their development efforts on their next installment in The Witcher series, currently codenamed Polaris.

For chooms (friends) who've braved the neon-drenched streets of Night City, a bittersweet chapter closes. CD Projekt Red, the studio behind the genre-defining cyberpunk RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, has officially ended development on the title. This news, while signaling the culmination of a long and passionate journey, also paves the way for exciting new ventures - the highly anticipated next Witcher game (Project Polaris) and a glimpse into a potential Cyberpunk sequel codenamed Orion.

A Decade-Long Odyssey Ends: Reflecting on Cyberpunk 2077's Development

Cyberpunk 2077's journey began in 2012, its reveal sparking a firestorm of anticipation. The promise of an open-world, immersive cyberpunk experience captivated gamers worldwide. The wait, however, was substantial. Development faced hurdles, and the game's initial launch in 2020, while visually stunning, was marred by performance issues.

CD Projekt Red took responsibility, issuing apologies and dedicating themselves to extensive patching and improvements. The past few years have seen Cyberpunk 2077 evolve significantly, with updates addressing bugs, adding content, and refining the overall experience. This dedication culminated in a critical and commercial resurgence, with the game even receiving a BAFTA Award for "Best Evolving Game."

The Legacy of Cyberpunk 2077: A Genre-Bending Masterpiece

Despite the rocky launch, Cyberpunk 2077's impact is undeniable. It's a sprawling, atmospheric masterpiece that brought the cyberpunk world to life. From the dazzling visuals of Night City to the depth of its characters and lore, Cyberpunk 2077 offered a truly unique experience.

The game's influence is evident across various media. Cosplay communities continue to be vibrant, with fans meticulously recreating iconic characters and outfits. Cyberpunk fashion trends have even emerged, with clothing inspired by the game's aesthetics gaining popularity.

A Look Ahead: Project Polaris and the Future of Cyberpunk

With Cyberpunk 2077's development complete, CD Projekt Red has shifted its focus. The studio is now fully committed to Project Polaris, the next installment in the beloved Witcher series. While details remain scarce, early reports suggest a return to a more traditional, story-driven RPG format – a prospect sure to excite fans of Geralt of Rivia's adventures.

But fear not, edgerunners (mercenaries)! The world of Cyberpunk might not be done yet. CD Projekt Red has confirmed the existence of Project Orion, a project heavily rumored to be a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. While specifics are under wraps, the potential for a return to Night City with a new story and refined mechanics is tantalizing.

The Future of Cyberpunk is Bright: A Time for Optimism

Cyberpunk 2077's development journey may not have been a smooth ride, but its legacy is undeniable. It's a game that pushed boundaries, captivated audiences, and left a lasting mark on the gaming landscape. With the talented team at CD Projekt Red focusing on Project Polaris and the potential of Project Orion, the future of both The Witcher and Cyberpunk appears bright.

The Development Update

Despite the end of active development on Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt still maintains a small team of 17 individuals who had been working on a full-blown sequel to the game, codenamed Orion. Additionally, there are 39 people dedicated to creating The Witcher multiplayer spin-off, Sirius, led by internal studio The Molasses Flood.

CD Projekt Red ceased development of Cyberpunk 2077 following the release of its sole expansion, Phantom Liberty, in September 2023. This decision came after the game-changing Update 2.0, which significantly overhauled Cyberpunk 2077 with features like a new perk system and enhanced AI. Update 2.1 followed, addressing a multitude of bugs and balance issues in the open-world role-playing game. Update 2.12 then applied a final layer of polish.

CD Projekt has already put the machinery to work to carry out what eventually turned out to be The Witcher 4. After officially ending Cyberpunk 2077 development, the studio has finalized the pre-production phase of Geralt of Rivia's fourth adventure and begun the production phase. The countdown begins for one of the most anticipated RPGs of the coming years to arrive.

The Witcher 4 is currently being worked on by around 400 people, and plans to move into the production phase by the "second half of the year". CD Projekt wants to recover the name it made after the success of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and after the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which tarnished part of it.

So, chooms, grab your favorite katana (or cybernetic arm), raise a glass of valentino (a fictional drink in Cyberpunk), and celebrate the incredible journey of Cyberpunk 2077. The future holds exciting possibilities, and who knows? Maybe V's story isn't over just yet...
